Many people begin meditation wondering: Am I doing this correctly?

Mindfulness meditation doesn’t require a perfectly quiet mind, a special room or a complicated posture. You simply need somewhere comfortable to sit and a willingness to notice what is happening.

Find Your Position

Sit on a chair, cushion, the floor or somewhere quiet in nature. Let your feet rest comfortably on the ground or cross your legs naturally.

Allow your spine to rise without becoming rigid. Soften your shoulders, rest your hands comfortably and gently lower your chin. Your eyes can be closed, partially closed or softly focused.

Aim to be:

Alert, but not tense.
Relaxed, but not collapsed.

Notice Your Breath

There is no need to change your breathing.

Simply notice it.

Feel the air entering and leaving your body, or the gentle rise and fall of your chest or abdomen.

Follow one breath in.

And one breath out.

When Your Mind Wanders

Thoughts will appear. You may start planning, remembering or worrying.

This does not mean you are doing meditation incorrectly.

Simply recognise that your attention has wandered and gently return to your breath.

Notice. Return. Begin again.

Each time you return, you are practising mindfulness.

Pause Before Reacting

You may notice an itch, discomfort or an urge to move. Before responding automatically, pause for a moment and observe the sensation.

Then decide whether you want to move.

This simple pause is an important part of mindfulness — creating a little space between what we experience and how we respond.

How Long?

Even five minutes is enough to begin. Over time, you might explore 10, 15 or 20 minutes.

Consistency matters more than trying to meditate for long periods.

An Invitation from Sati

Mindfulness is not about stopping thoughts or becoming perfectly calm. It is about developing a different relationship with what is happening within and around us.

Your mind will wander.

Simply notice.

And gently return.

Sit. Notice. Wander. Return. Begin again.
